Setting Up Your Ledger Device: A Comprehensive Guide
Setting up a Ledger device properly is essential for protecting your crypto assets. This guide walks you through the setup process step by step.
What You’ll Need

Your Ledger device (Nano S, Nano S Plus, or Nano X)

A USB cable (provided with the device)

A computer or smartphone with internet access

Ledger Live app

Access to Ledger Live login

A safe environment (avoid public spaces or cameras)
Step 1: Unbox and Inspect

Check the box to ensure it hasn’t been tampered with. A sealed box and untouched components are signs it’s genuine.

Ledger devices should never come pre-set with a PIN or recovery phrase. If it does, do not use it.
Step 2: Install Ledger Live

Open your browser and go to Ledger.com/start – the official starting point for all Ledger devices.

Download and install Ledger Live for your operating system.

Open the app and select "Get Started."
Step 3: Initialize the Device

Connect your Ledger device to your computer or smartphone using the USB cable.

Choose “Set up as new device.”

Create a secure PIN code (4–8 digits). Don’t share it with anyone.

Your device will display 24 recovery words. This is your Recovery Phrase.
⚠️ Important: Write the 24-word phrase on the recovery sheet provided. Never take a picture or store it digitally.

Confirm your recovery phrase by selecting the correct words on the device.

Ledger will now generate a secure private key based on your recovery phrase.
Step 4: Pair Device with Ledger Live

In Ledger Live, choose "Check my Nano" to verify authenticity.

Follow the on-screen instructions to pair and confirm your device.

After setup, you’ll use Ledger Live login each time to securely access your portfolio and accounts.
Step 5: Add Crypto Accounts

In Ledger Live, navigate to Accounts > Add Account.

Select the cryptocurrency you want to manage (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum).

Follow the prompts to add the account and let Ledger Live sync with the blockchain.
Step 6: Receive Crypto

Go to Accounts > Receive.

Select the account and verify the address on your Ledger device screen.

Copy and use this address to receive crypto securely.
Step 7: Sending Crypto (Optional)

Go to Accounts > Send.

Enter the recipient’s address, amount, and confirm the transaction on your Ledger device.
Security Tips

Store your recovery phrase in a secure location, offline.

Enable password lock for Ledger Live.

Never share your PIN or recovery phrase with anyone.

Regularly update your Ledger device firmware and Ledger Live app.
In Case of Loss or Theft
If your device is lost or stolen, you can restore access using your 24-word recovery phrase on any Ledger or compatible wallet.
